Is there any way to encode a wmv in 320x240 and have it run at a reasonable speed? I cant get anything to run to fast if its over 160x120 er whatever that res that is. Is this just a problem with media player & .wmv files, i mean can you playback mpg in 320x240 faster. How bout divx does that playback fast at higher resalutions?

DivX is what I always use. And I personally DESPISE all Microsoft encoders. But just make sure you have the bitrate at an appropriate level. Check the howto guide on this site for more specific information.

Whats wrong with microsoft encoders? MY bitrate is usually about 150 to 300k and the video will stop while sounds still playing and then play about 5 more sconds of video and stop again, and so on.

What program do you use to play these files?

Windows Media Player is entirely too slow for wmv on anything less than a 200MHz CPU.

Edit: "New"

I play them using windows media player 7.1 for ppc, ist that all that plays wmv files? And i use an ipaq oc'd to 221, i even tried bit rate of 450 and its still way to jummpy.

You should keep it below 450, 400 is good for the iPaq, 350 would make it even better. Ugh.. don't use WMV files, they are really bad. Use DivX, MPEGs, and PocketTV(.com)

I've had fabulous results with plain MPEG-1 using the tmpeg encoder. Basically, I took a 300MB DivX and converted it to a 300MB mpeg. The loss of compression balanced out with the smaller screen size, so it remained the same size.

As far as playback, it was absolutely smooth on PocketTV on my IPAQ, no OC'ing necessary. I hammered on the WMV settings for a long time - basically I could get a pixelated mess of smooth playing video, OR a nicely detailed slideshow. I'm unsure what kinda crack MicroSoft is smoking, but I think WMV/Mpeg4 family codec decompressors need too much CPU to decode smoothly on these little things.

Whether DivX gets decently ported or not, we can't forget that these CPU's are still in the realm of the Pentium 1 processors.

- Richard

Well, i think that about 250 300 for my casio is perfect. It will take a 40 minute video to about 70 meg. This is good for me and my small ass 128 meg cf card. I think i'm going to release a bunch of skate video's i've converted. They were 300 meg divx but they look the exact same if not better at 70 meg. I dunno what all that extra meg was for. But it doesn't show at all. What i'm tryin to figure out is whats the setting to have FULL screen vids. 320x144 is not full screen in pocket tv, and it bothers me

its jus a little screen landscape

O wait all of my skate vids, you are supposed to buy . Well check #sk8videos on dalnet in like a week and a half and i'll have at least 3-4 released

Matt, I saw that it destroyed the layout and stuff and modyfied my post.
It said that the codec can be found somewhere @ Microsoft's, I'll look up the direct link, right?
:)
