i've been messing around with encoding vcds and i've found that i can encode each part of a movie (usually about 600megs a piece) down to 128 megs max. Im always looking for advice however from fellow encoders. Here are the specs i generally use: 150Kbs mpeg layer 1
23 fps, 44100khz 128kbs mp3 audio. If you have any suggestions for better quality/whatever, plz post a reply

the same settings using the divx 4.x codec would look a lot better.

not to crazy about divx, it eats up cpu, and the player is crap for ppc.

have you tried any of the recent versions of pocketdivx? You'd be suprised how much it's improved.

yeh the new divx player is tops. i have an em500, and none of the others ever worked for me, but this one does.
you'll find that you can get full screen good quality playback at about 1 meg/min. I run mine of an MMC card, so its about the slowest ppc bundle available.

yes i have infact. And they couldnt detect the avi files, i tried to hack around this but no dice. Either way divx takes up more cpu power than mpeg, so with a 206 mhz proccessor you should try to conserve as much as possible. Also divx pisses me off, this is more of a personal thing. id rather download a 2 sets of rars burn the bin and cue and watch it on my tv rather than watch high quality divx on a computer screen.

Actually PocketDivx uses less cpu than PocketTV. We get better quality and better framerates than PocketTV(ie. less CPU intensive, unless of course PocketTV is skipping frames for the heck of it

).

not sure what you mean about detecting your AVIs? Have you tried .7e?

Wow so pocket DivX is faster than pocketTV too? So why the hell would anyone use mpeg, i dunno i just got somethin personal against mpeg. Id rather download a divx and watch it on tv out than than burn all tthoughs bins of lower quality movies, know what i mean?

Well, the speed is based on the players... and it looks like PocketDivx has been really optimized. Bender, have you tried any of my multimedia clips?

And what does it matter if it's a CPU hog anyways... not like you're going to be multitasking while watching a movie on your pocket pc

Uhhh dumbass, why would you argue with the programmer of pocket divx i think he knows better than you about how much cpu his own program takes. Plus i encode all my divx's at 24 fps.

obviously bender knows best, and doesn't need to listen to people who have tried both.

Rob, try decimating frame rate by 2 in Vdub, it takes the filesize and the time to encode it down right down.

bender,

you are correct that MPEG-4(Divx) is generally more cpu intensive than mpeg-1, however... we have optimized our decoder to the point that is is faster than any current mpeg-1 decoder for the pocketPC(including our own). In theory we can make our mpeg-1 decoder even faster than our divx decoder, but right now that is not the case nor is it the case for PoocketTV. PocketTVs decoder is about on par with PocketDivx for performance on the IPAQ, however on most other devices we do outperform them as we have optimized specifically for several devices, while they have intentionally generic code. Also one of the biggest performance problems with video is not the deocode performance, but the display performance, of which we have the fastest display routines for both MIPS and ARM.

Chris, there is a reason that cpu usage matters though and that is battery life. The harder you use the cpu the quick it uses battery. But again just another reason to use Pocket Divx

this is interesting, so you guys optimized the player souly for the strongarm proccesor? Because i was under the impression its the codec its self that hogs the cpu, not the player, although im also aware of optimizations of codecs/players/apps/whatever for specific cpus. And im not trying to sound like i know everything. heh. I have a open mind when it comes to encoding as well as most of the things i am interested in. So rock on with the badass optimized player, good stuff.

Ya know, realplayer on ppc would be pretty cool, the video quality is relitivley good and i think its audio sound better than WM8 at 64k, just my opinion, does realplayer use more cpu tho?
