Bluetooth and walls

Tom, Hows it going?

I can't speak from expirience, but I can tell you how intel explains the wireless world.

GSM/GPRS is like the entire gigantic wireless internet (The World)
WiFi 802.11 is a Home wireless network (Family)
Bluetooth is a "personal" network, connecting things up to 10 feet away, but mostly things that you have on you, but when you don't want wires to be hanging on you.

Bluetooth isn't supposed to work through the walls, from my understanding of the signal. But, if you have a bluetooth access point, not just ad-hoc going from pocket pc to cell phone or something, that may pump up the signal. It would also depend on the thickness and make up of the walls..... if its 10 inches of concrete, nothings going to pass through it.

Now, Asus makes a nice bluetooth card, it's the same price as their wifi card and I know it works in the A620 running PPC2003 and it doesn't protrude that much either.

Yeah, it's meant as a personal network, from like you left pocket to the other. No, not really.... but they say about a 10' range.... like a dorm room, from printer, to cell phone to notebook and pocket pc.. something like that..

how do the dongles get such good range then? are they a lot more powerful than the BT built into the 2215?

From my personal experience, My 2215 to a 1945, we had a full strength signal from about 40 feet away, through one wall. Which I was pretty shocked by, since that is not what I heard bluetooth worked at. This test was conducted between Mike(co-worker who post here) and I while eating lunch at a chinease place.

what I was wanting to do is to connect my pda to my pc through one of those 40 metre range bluetooth dongles. would be going through roughly one wall but only 5metres or so away.

That's pretty good.. I wonder if they're going to change that at all... It is less than wifi, but still a lot more than they have been saying it was for.
