Pocket PC vs Smartphone

Hi,

I used to be a regular reader - not so much poster on pocket matrix as i own an ipac 2210. I dropped a post about 3 months ago asking about the pros and cons of switching to a smartphone and got a good and varied response.

Well i took the plunge and went for the Orange SPV e200 and have not looked back . . .not used my 2210 for months . . . With the SPV i can do almost everything that i ever did on my pda but with the added convenience of just having one device rather than lugging around a pda and mobile phone. You can sync with outlook for email and calendar, PIM information, play games, listen to and watch windows media files, watch divx on betaplayer, fiddle with the registry with phm tools. Pretty much most pda software has now made it to the smartphone in one incarnation or another.

I cant ever see myself going back to my pda - its only use now is as a paper weight. I dont want to knock PDA's because i think they are great and before i got my smartphone used it quite often even though at times it was a pain to carry about.

Anyway just thought i'd share my experience of switching from pda to smartphone and wanted to see what you guys thought about the future of pda's now that smartphones are improving all the time - how many of you are considering the switch?!

I agree that PDAs are often a pain to carry, and I agree that smartphones have come a long way with programs and can do many of the same functions.

For me, however, the PDA is a must because of text entry features. I've gotten to the point where I leave my laptop docked at work when I travel, which is most of my reason for owning a Pocket PC -- at least such a capable one -- in the first place. But, relying solely on the Pocket PC often means entering text. Even the smartest of predicting software for phones is just too cumbersome, in my opinion.

If the smartphones solve the text entry problem (tochscreens maybe?), then I'd probably be on board!

My first post. Howdy all.

Phones are not allowed in the Semiconductor fab that I work in...PDA's and pagers are welcomed.

I just picked up the A716. Nice little machine. My primary use will be to use the CF slot to transfer pictures from my Nikon D70 (on it's CF card) over to my website, while traveling. Havent figured out how to ftp files yet...

I've owned an assortment of wierd and wonderful pda's, or "organizers" as they used to be called.

-One of my first was a Vertical "Sharp Wizard" with a touch screen, a cheesy grey screen, and different little cards for stuff. I even had the little sharp thermal printer...great for "duplicating" receipts in a crunch.

-My next was a Casio Boss series.

-Then I "stepped up" to a HP LX100 palmtop computer, which was excellent for talking to computers at work, document control, and had a cool docking station and stuff.

-I then got a Jordana a couple of years ago, but never found a "killer ap" for it. It was easier just to use available computers.
