How do you actually play the games

Weird topic but please bare with me...
I've seen numerous screenshots of emulated games and comments on how playable they are but I haven't seen anything on how they are actually played.
I mean, snes games for example, they're designed for a dpad on left and 4 buttons on right with 2 triggers. The a620/4150/x30 all have dpad with 2 buttons on either side, not to mention short 2 buttons. How do you play like this?

First of all, by "triggers", I will assume you are referring to the hilariously worhtless "L" and "R" buttons. I have yet to play a game that uses these buttons at all. As far as the four main buttons, most good games only use two of them primarily, such as mario and donkey kong country. Occasionally donkey kong and mario require you to use a third button, but it typically isn't a big deal to reach around to a button to the left of the d-pad. One button is run, the other is jump, for the most part. That's all there is to it. Of course, with regular NES, no button is left out at all.
