Why can't we have a big built in harddrive on a PDA?

Yeah those mp3 players with HD's are not much bigger than PPC's. You are correct. Now take the HD out of the MP3 player and stick it in a current PocketPC. You now have the largest PPC size-wise out there.

Now consider that people already fight for extended battery life (buying high capacity batteries or booing those devices that you cannot remove them), tack on an HD which has moving parts, and battery life is going to go even lower. An MP3 player doesn't have to do much else other than stream those MP3s off an HD, and occasionally light a display. That's it. That's only a portion of what a typical PPC user is doing at any moment with his or her PDA.

Someday perhaps, but I don't see it happening in less than a year.

They are talking here about 16MB compact flash.

1GB is pretty cheap Compact Flash, SD.

Many PDA's are getting USB host. Most big 20GB+ MP3 players also work as external hard drives. Brighthand listed a must have PDA feature list, 20GB+ drives came in 11th with 64% wanting them. Hopefully someone might write the mass storage device driver.

After a look there is a beta for the driver here.

When I installed the software it asked if I wanted to replace usbmsc.dll. Having read the problems and this was just a trial I said no. I then read the 4 page instruction leaflet with my newest PDA I thought might do USB host. It said it does mice and thumbdrives. I then had a laugh with imagemaker and a mouse when you can't see the pointer. USB mass storage it didn't want to know, maybe the driver worked, more likely I'd of lost essential mouse input to my mobile phone.

I'll have to include show pointer in my programs now.

Anyway then I stand by what I said. Once the drivers are sorted out connect the Ipod and transfer what you need to a 1GB card.
The stylus is mightier than the pen!

Im 50/50 on it. Having that kind of mass storage would be awesome, but at the same time, im not giving up a minute of battery life. Nor do I want to have to worry about it taking a knock and then having to send it in.

U dont lose Memomry on UR SD/compact flash because there flash ROM while ur PPC has RAM. ROM is Read Only Memory which can stay without the memory on while RAM - RandomAccess Memory will get deleted once it loses a charge. All Ppc have rom To store the OS.

I have an external HD that id like to hook up to my PPC, so if i feel like carrying it around to watch movies id do that, then when i wanted my sleek ppc leave the HD behind.Too bad my PPC doesnt have USB
