The backup battery is designed to protect the contents of your device if the main battery goes flat, or when you're swapping batteries. The whole point of it is to remain at 100%, as that gives you most insurance if you do something wrong.
It's usually internal and non-servicable, and will recharge itself, but older Pocket PCs just use a 2032 cell instead.
It provides just enough juice to keep power supplied to the RAM and nothing else. You can't run your Pocket PC from it.

Oh, I understand. Damn, too bad I can't use it as a secondary battery.

For some reason my backup battery only lasts a few months, I've replaced it maybe 2 times already in a couple of years and again it is now warning me about the backup being low every time I use it. The readings dont seem accurate for some reason either, as in before it would warn me but be fine for a week then remind me again. I have an old Axim x5 and its been pretty random with some problems, I suppose this may be one of them. I'm guessing it could be intermitant contact somewhere any other reasons why my backup battery has been dying so quickly or is this how long they are supposed to last?
