Dave, you can't map a drive with the operating system though I believe there are a couple of utilities out there which do this. You should check
www.aximsite.com's supported software list.
I have not had any battery issues but I'm not trying to use for more than an hour at a time. I play movies on the train sometimes and that's the longest continuous use. Battery life on a PocketPCs is 'short' compared to what you would like.
As to known problems you can read about them on aximsite as well. The rom version V4 now out is more stable than the one Dell UK shipped in mine and I have installed it to cure the SD card issues.
I would say that overall it's less robust than my Axim X5 but quite a bit faster so I would not go back. It's the first PPC I could properly browse the web on and I've had 6 of them.
