This is nuts.

http://www.casioextra.com/

This Factory New Refurbished [EM500] unit comes complete with a Samsonite PDA case worth £9.99 and also SyncTalk professional 2.0 from SoDeog worth £24.99

Normal retail price : £399.99

Online Price : £ 199.99

In case you don't know what that translates to in USD:

Live Rates as of 2001.05.10 05:24:52 GMT.
199.99 GBP
United Kingdom Pounds = 284.572 USD
United States Dollars
1 GBP = 1.42293 USD 1 USD = 0.702775 GB

...considering I paid about $300 more for my E-125, this is a steal. And as far as I remember, the cheapest price on a new EM500 is about 385. That's 100 dollars cheaper. this is less than hald the cost of a new Ipaq. nuts, i say. If I lived in the UK, I'd be all over this. I'm not sure how much shipping overseas would be.. you could possibly get it for about 20 bucks, which is still like 80 bucks cheaper than any online store in the US.

Actually, lately I've been thinking about trading in my E-125 and all the CF cards including my microdrive for the EM500 and with the left over money I could probably get a nice SD or MMC and an Ipaq to boot. :)

MMC is the main reason why I stayed away from the EM500, as I reckon others have as well.

Last modification: 999 - 05/10/01 at 14:34:28

mmc is pretty darn slow and expensive, but theyre going down in price along with the rest of the memory world, but i've heard that SD is just as fast as CF if not faster, and in another year they're going to have a 1 gig SD so, it can't be that bad. And, the only reason the EM500 is smaller than the 125 is becuase of the lack of the CF slot. And i thought you had an EM500 999? You always seem to be the first one to recommend it to anyone looking to buy a PPC.... so does that mean you have an E-125?

I've had an E125 on loan with the option to buy, but I ended up returning it. I had the E115 which I sold for the iPAQ, but kept my E100 from a purchase prior. I've also had a handspring visor, jornada 545 (first pocketPC), and was very close to the EM. When I went to purchase it, I realized I missed the boat on that package deal they had which included a free MMC card.

I've heard mixed reviews on the MMC speed, but the fact is, it does offer more storage capacity, and that's what matters. I'm still going to get one, I'm just waiting for the right offer. I don't want to pay top dollar on a machine that's just going to add to my techno-clutter.

The reason I recommend the EM to "first timers" is because they initially want an iPAQ. To someone not inclined to hardware specs, I suggest the EM because it's asthetically similar. The CPU speed is nice, and it can OC easily for when they get "hardcore" into the PPC thing. It's also cheaper than the iPAQ, and can do anything you'd want at a better overall value price.

Intermission

My real name is Dick Gozinya if anyone is interested.

End Intermission

Why buy an iPAQ then?
When I bought my iPAQ I did it for the speed, and further levels of expandability. There's not much an iPAQ can do that a Casio can't. The only real difference is the extravagance in which the iPAQ can do it in. That's what you're paying top dollar for, so my PocketQuake can run XX frames faster, so it can load XX seconds sooner, so I can go online anywhere etc etc etc.

Nobody really needs all those bells and whistles, especially as a "first timer".

I will admit, they sure are nice though ;)

Last modification: 999 - 05/10/01 at 19:14:01

The EM has my vote on asthetics.

Otherwise, you're left with this as your only other option:
Image
