I'm in the market for an iPaq and wondered if there is a list of PCMCIA cards that work with the iPaq? Can I just use existing laptop modem and network cards?

havent got an ipaq but i understand you need an addon thingy to use pcmcia? i think you should get cf modem/network cards. they'r echeaper as well methinks...<br><br>i've got a pretec 56k compactmodem. i think they're around £100 - probably a lot lower by now, especially if you're buying in america.

Don't listen to Paul, he owns a Jornada *snicker, snicker*.<br><br>What Paul was saying was that you'll need to buy a PC Card Sleeve. I'd get the Dual PC Card (or PC Card Type III) Sleeve for the iPaq, if you can find one.<br><br>Most PC Cards will work in the iPaq, as long as the iPaq has drivers for them. But any storage type card will work, including hard drives. But just go to the relevant manufacturer's homepage and look up the product. It should say if it works for the PPC, if not you can email them about it.

On thatnote -<br><br>Any of you guys used a PCMCIA network card directly with your PPC? How'd it work out for ya? I think that'd probably be the only thing I'd use the expansion sleeve for, but I don't wanna go for it if the network interaction sucks. Danke.

If you're talking about Ethernet, then it works perfectly. Either with the default, built-in drivers, or the fancier drivers included with cards such as Socket's Low Power Ethernet.<br><br>Dan East

Also, there are some advantages to using CF form factor. We have both CF and PCMCIA Socket Low Power Ethernet cards. With the CF version, we can basically use them in any device. HPCs have both CF and PCMCIA, nearly all Pocket PCs have CF, and you can use them in PCMCIA-only Pocket PCs and Laptops with a trivial $10 adapter. I would also recommend the "ruggedized" CF version, in which the dongle is permanently atteached to the card. You will find that it is easier to remove the entire card and dongle as one unit. The card / dongle connector is rather flimsy and somewhat hard to reconnect (certainly harder than inserting the entire card). With the ruggedized version you can just pull the whole thing out by the dongle, and there's really no need to go around with the ethernet card inserted and the dongle detached.<br><br>Dan East
