Ok, this looks really cool.
http://www.pdawin.com/irtranceiver.html
It goes onto the top of your ipaq and boost the ir signal up to 50feet. It was made to be used with the tv remote app, but I think it would be cool for sending other things as well, such as notes. The problem is that looks a bit complicated for me to make myself. But if one of you smart people would like to contribute to PocketMatrix, you could write up a howto with some handy dandy pictures;) That would be awesome.

i'm gonna try making a very small magnifine-glass type solution.... a magnifine glass would magnify the ir beam... would it not?

If you use the right lenses you could make a better signal. But to get a distance (power) boost, you'll need something more sofisticated (eletronic stuff).

it seems the ipaq sends the IR beam out which is recieved by the back of the device which then outputs a beam of the same fequency through the big mutha of an LED through the front of the device... i think.
