Cool, are these xscales going to have openGL accelerators right off the bat? Anyone think there going to boost the ppc price over the usuall $600 in the us? 895 pounds sounds is alota us dollars but these things arent like retail yet so there price could be hi due to non bulk manufacturing right?

The marketing plan is actually rather intelligent. The new ppc 2002's have recently been released, so what they are trying to do, is get the 400 mhz's ppc's out asap before the prices of the 200 ppc's drop too much. Then they can release the 400s for like $800+ and keep the others from falling more than $50 (est.) in price.

Thats gay :( mes cant afford no 800 bucks and i have vowed not to buy a new ppc until 400's were out

It all come together too fast. Nvidia did a similar thing with the Geforce 3 (from what I can tell), and it worked.

While I'm sure that these new Xscale PPCs are going to be ridiculously expensive when properly available, I think the reason that these are so high priced is because they're rare. I think they haven't actually been officially released over there but somehow a few units have been distributed. My brother seems to think that they may be unofficial copies of Fujitsu LOOX units, as you can purchase clones of many things over there (Nintendo 64, Nokia phones, etc.). It would explain the similarities of the two and tiny quantites available. Either way, I WANT ONE!

P.S Any thoughts about the StrongARM compatibility, anyone?

?

pardon the ignorance, but what's xscale? i'm assuming some ARM processor enhancements, with graphics acceleration...but what else?

will the 400's feature it?

and what happened to the whole thing about powerVR making a pocketpc 3d accelerator?

I dunno whats up with powervr i was tryin to find out if anyone knew if the xscales would have powervr.

The XScale is just the new intel arm proccesor that runs at 400mhz im assuming its intels code name.

oh ok. spiffy.

feb 4th 2002 eweek has articles on the new phone integration in the NEXT build of PocketPC. Already. I'm guessing that the new os will launch with the new processors/phone capabilities?

While i think that the Xscale PPCs are going to be very fast, i don't think that the first ones are going to run at 400mhz straight from the start, judging by the Fujitsu LOOX's specs. They have a 300mhz processor, although my understanding is that an Xscale processor running at 300mhz is much faster than a StrongARM cpu running at the same clock speed.

japanese people are so funny:

The Simpsons: AmericaTown Restaurant "Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo"

Homer: I can't believe they stuck us at Taxachusetts! [points to table] Hey, you know, I once knew a man from Nantucket.
Bart: And?
Homer: Let's just say the stories about him are greatly exaggerated.
Waiter: Howdy gangstas! I'm average American Joe Salaryman waiter.
Bart: These prices suck! 10,000 yen for coleslaw?
Lisa: Don't you serve anything that's even remotely Japanese?
Waiter: Don't ask me; I don't know anything! I'm product of American education system. I also build poor-quality cars and inferior-style electronics.
Homer: [cackles] Oh, they got our number!
