HP cleared another major hurdle today in the process of purchasing Compaq Computer Corporation as the Federal Trade Commission approves the acquisition.
At this point it is unclear what effect, if any, such a merger would have on the HP Jornada or Compaq iPaq lines of Pocket PCs.
More details can be found in this .

I hope it's for the better. But less competition never is good to the industry or consumers.

I had HP Jornada for awhile and it sucked big time! No backup battery! Everytime my battery ran out, my entire disk got whiped out. I thought it might just be a fault one. After having 3 different Jornadas I decided to get a Casio and I've never been happier. My Cassio EM-500 is awesome

Let's hope they stick with what works. Compaq should continue making computers, and HP continue making printers.
I aggree with Pescadore

I want a Dell XScale PocketPC. They've got those changeable covers, and my brother just got one of their laptops and it kicks ass. Do you know how durable a Dell PocketPC would be? And the screens would be the best of any PocketPC out there! I'm sure Wireless 802.11b would be an option. Drool, if Dell let me semi-design my own PocketPC features.

I'm buying a new laptop from them in May...
P4 1.7Ghz
60GB HD
1GB of DDR ram
Geforce 4 Go 64mb
15 inch enhanced UXGA screen
internal nic/modem/wireless
firewire
two batteries
dvd 8x (unless they have 16x by then)
maybe a cdrw/dvd combo instead of dvd... not sure yet.

Wonderful! Brilliant! - bad technical support coupled with even worse technical support.
Sorry...my experience with Compaq is getting to me. Right now I can strangle every person who works for Compaq. Then I'm going to cut them up into little pieces and then I'm going to jump up and down on them until I get blisters and then ... and then ... I'll do something even worse.
I just want some sympathy. Surely Compaq have done this to someone else.

I just caught a short blurb on CNN of interest. They were reporting on the merger, and asked some analyst (didn't catch his name) how this would affect the new Pocket PC market, which is still in its infancy. He thought it would hurt Pocket PC since HP and Compaq are two of the bigger PPC OEMs. I got the distinct impression that either the iPaq or Jornada will be discontinued because of the merger. Of course it's difficult to tell exactly how much the guy really knows about HP's future intentions. It may be possible for HP to continue producing both lines of devices as they are still very different from one another, similar to Dell's Inspiron and Lattitude lines of laptops. They don't really compete with one another as much as providing two different families of product for different types of uses. HP has always leaned to the "commercial" consumer with the Jornada (how else could they resist including a D-Pad for so many years), while the iPaq has been touted more as a sheik, multimedia device. Of course the standardization to the ARM processor, etc, closed the gap between the devices.

Well hopefully Casio doesn't merge with Apple or some horseshit. I can just imagine what Apple would think a pocket pc should look like... some tangerine colored translucent door stop...
