E200 backlight

E200 backlight

Postby Fish » Mar 16, 2002 @ 2:18am

My E200 was on the cradle during a reboot and shut itself off. Now I can't get the backlight on to save my life. Holding power button in, soft reset, hard reset, looking at the brightness setting. NO dice...

I'm going to return it and try a Compaq next. This thing lasted two weeks before the backlight quit working. I notice now, while I'm boxing it up that it smells like something smoked in it.

In my opinion, a $600 piece of shit.

If anyone out there is thinking of getting an E200... DON'T

on the back of your device there is a serial number, in the second set of numbers there is something to the extent of "0AP" there are also 1AP and all the way up to 5AP. You want a unit that is 5AP. Casio will send you a new unit if needed, and I heard that one person in particular is very easy to work with, and basically it's no questions asked. Her name is Melissa, she can be reached at 973-361-5400 ext: 4265.

I'd read in the forums about the serial number and this one is in fact a 2AP. So I checked with my contact at PCConnection and he said he'd send me another.

I just wonder what level of confidence I can have that I won't have the same problem with a 5AP series later on.

You might wanna rethink that whole "return it & get an Ipaq" idea. I recently upgraded to an Ipaq 3870, which currently suffers from an irritating problem of the backlit not switching on when the device has been started up. Most of the time it can be rectified by holding the power button 3-4 times, but sometimes it won't turn on for a litte while. It's a problem common to 38xx users & no update has cured the problem for me yet.

If Casio cannot rectify the problem, maybe you should consider other PPC manufacturers, rather than Compaq, if you want to steer clear of backlight troubles. BTW Have u checked the Casio site?

I'll probably get over my tempter tantrum by monday and make sure I get a 5AP this time. At least I'll be able to get everything back since I backed up to two different CF cards and my computer.

I wouldn't sweat it just ret RICoder, I have a 0AP unit. So far I havent experienced any of the issues that are supposed to plague the earlier units, and until I do I will not send it back.

I have a 1AP also, and I have had the backlight stop working once or twice, but a softreset seems to fix it. Think that I should send it back and get a new one?

When it goes, it goes for good. If you smell the CF card slot you can smell that discouraging, expensive burned electonics smell. THAT'S when you send it in.

I have a 1AP here too; no problems on my end.. however, I went through one already :)

Casio almost did a recall of the e200 because of this.. but didn't as it wouldve been too expensive.

anyway, its not what you do to the unit that will destroy the backlight permanently. it can go out at any time (when the light is switched on or off, seems to be a wiring problem), and will within the first week (or day, if youre a total ppc geek like me), and you will smell that burnt electronics smell that fish mentioned.

however, if you have a 0ap-4ap unit that has been working fine for a week, with no problems (including the it shut down and will never come back on problem.. where that one happens in the first few days as well) then you have one of the few good working devices ;),

which is why there was no recall :)

I disagree, mine froze up while I was testing a program, and now, I had to hard reset it. So, when it was finished it is stuck with a blue border at the top, and a white box at the bottom. Time to call casio I think.

My last post is a good example of why you always want to stay in the same tense.
