Slow iPaq?

I have recently started playing around with developing software for the Pocket PC

I have a iPaq 3850, and am worried that it is running slowly.

I started with EasyCE, downloading the "sample" and "bounders" apps by Jacco

He says in his tutorial that Bouncers ought to run at about 48fps - I only get 24 fps.

In the "Sample" app (which just moves an icon across the screen) there is a delay loop, that Jacco says is necessary as the frame drawing on the iPaq is pretty fast. Hovever I get the same frame rate even if i take out the delay (it takes about 7s to move the icon 200 points, (about 28fps).

I wondered what sort of performance other people who have tried these apps are getting, and whether anyone knows what may cause my iPaq to run slowly

As an aside, I often notice that when running up the Tasks program on my iPaq it can take several seconds to come up, the iPaq seems to freeze for a while before coming to life again.

Having only had the machine for 3 months, I don't know if this is normal, but certain functions seem a bit slow for a 200MHz computer (MP3s occasionally break up, etc).

What sort of frame rate do you get playing Quake or Wolfenstein?

You said you are using an Ipaq 3850. Are you modifying the sample's code to implement the GAPI-workaround for the problem caused by Compaq's changed orientation of the screen? Otherwise, the entire screen is being rotated, thus greatly slowing down graphic routines.

Lemme know if this is the case and if you would like any help/info with implementing workaround code.

No, because he said his MP3's stutter too. It sounds like you've got a problem with your iPaq. I'd think about backing up all your data to a CF card and exchanging it for a new one.

Before sending your iPAQ back, (always assuming you do) read the thread entitled "Compaq Technical Support Problems"

Wonder why the slogan under my name is "Don't buy Compaq? 8)
