You must use a brightness filter in VirtualDub and i use also a hue/saturation filter for better colorized image´s.
The cleaned video function is only for Ipaq and should be turn on also.

I don't see a hue/saturation filter in VirtualDub. Is that in a different program or an add on filter I can get somewhere else?

I'm not sure, but it could be a problem on HP devices indeed.
I've encoded several videos for my Cassiopeia now, and I didn't have to use an additional filter.
The videos on my PPC just look like the screenshots I've added to the guide, which is very similar to the colors on my desktop PC as well.

If your display hardware is only 12 bit then dark colors will all blend together and appear even darker.

The HP 568 is a PPC2002 device which has 16 bit color.

It dithers the display to make it look more like 24-bit color.
