I have had my Jornada 548 for a while, and I have known about this trick for a while.

Step 1. Push and hold the scroll wheel (the action button) in while holding down on the clock with the stylus, which is loacted in the upper right hand corner.

Step 2. A little RUN prompt will appear, and you need to type rotate r

Step 3. Push ok and then do a soft reset and the Jornada will be in landscape mode.

Step 4. Re-align the touch screen for landscape mode by holding in the power button while the device is on.

Step 5. Repeat steps 1-4 to reset it back to portrait mode.

You can also use these programs to make the Jornada go in landscape mode.

ChangeOrientation

And there used to be a program called Rotator, that did the same thing, but I can't find it.

Here is some other cool links for you Jornada 540-520 series fans.

I've got a Jornada 420 (first generation color PSPC device, came out with the superior Casio E-105). HP released 16 bit display drivers for it also, although you had to dig to find them. With the 420, not only did the 16 bit driver make the display look much better, it also made it much, much faster. Like 3 times faster. The problem was that games of that era used a hacked, pre Game API library for direct screen access. It assumed that all 420's had an 8 bit display, so most games would not work properly with the 16 bit mode, even though they would have been much faster.

One word of caution!! Disable passord protection before you do this since the screen needs to be re-aligned after resetting. Unfortunately you need to enter the password before you can re-align and this causes great frustration (as in trying to figure out where the keys really are, sometimes off the screen).

Mike:

there's a program on your jornada, HP Settings (it's the contrast, volume, backlight, battery level, etc) program.

There are 3 tabs at the bottom of the program. one of them is "Preferences".

Go the that tab.

Select Colors (or whatever...) and it should let you pick between 8bit and 16 bit. You can tell quite well.

I don't know if this is available on all the 540 series. One of my friends at school also has one, and I don't remember it having that selection. If it doesn't, you probably are locked in at 8-bit, and you can do the landscape trick anyway. Righto.

I'm going to try it out tonight. I hope it works.

If only it worked for other pdas...then i wouldnt need to buy JS Landscape...

Rotate r does rotate the screen but I could not get it to work without switching to a different "Explorer" that allows you to see hidden files. The file is in the Windows directory. I used Resco Explorer that has alot more functionality then the standard Windoes Explorer. Set it to display hidden files and then run it with the r argument and then do a soft reset. Once you power up then press the power button and hold it until the alignment screen comes on so that you can align the screen (otherwise nothing is where you expect it to be). WARNING: Disable password before attempting! Trust me - this does work and is really good for reading bokks, etc.
