I have an iPAQ 3835 and the suto backlight feature feels like it is an early beta, and does not work all of the time. I use ito n the lowest setting when on battery and then it is on highest when being synched/charged. Other than that, in a good lighted room I may turn it off and use it with no backlight at all to conserve battery power in case I am away from one of my many synch/charge cables/cradles.
Note to self: Why don't you ever listen to me?

My EM-500 doesnt have a refliective screen, so outside even with it on full, i can hardly read what is on the screen, you can barely even see the start menu. :(
