try lots of small lens flairs (make the lens flairs a layer in photoshop, and when your done placing them, use a reverse selection blox to delete all the lens refraction circles that arnt part of the engine exhaust). then use the spray paint tool with a transluscency effect like lighten/darken/screen to make the edges of the engine flairs bluish. cant say I recall the old effect in such detail.. but I think I could recreate it just by takeing a line of flairs and then molding them useing the spray paint/erase/blur tools.

Or you could use the "Glow" effect... Sounds like a lot less trouble to me.

moose, thats exactly what a low budget film would do.. because its easy and looks like crap. ;p
also glow requires that you allready have the inside flame burst created... glow only creates the silouet for the outside of the flame.

maybe you should try actually searching for this rather than asking on a pocket pc forum?
there might be something at theforce.net in the fan film section.
