Divx or VCD???

I know a guy that is working on a codec to fit a full length movie on one VCD Disc but still DivX will probly be the best considering the size the files wind up being.

VCD is similar to VHS tape quality (DivX is definitely the better choice), you can fit about 70 minutes on one CD. You're limited to specific resolutions and bitrates, though.

SVCD has almost DVD quality, but not every standalone player is able to play this format, you have to use even more CDs.

Try to make DivX rips that fit on 2 CDs for optimal PC playback quality.

For standalone players, you'll have to be content with (S)VCD.

well it depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to be able to play them on your DVD player under your TV then those can read (S)VCD's and not DivX.

SVCD tends to have the best picture quality, but you can always compress DivX in whatever bitrate and filters you want so it could be basically a raw stream with very little compression if need be.

That means, I don't know, basically.

Noooooooooooo, hard decision

With compiling all the posts here, divx got a little more ups for my situation. Anyone know how to split a divx file into 2 files so I can put them on 2 CD's? Thanks for the help

Mainly for PC use, im going to use it for. Of course, I have a dvd player on my pc so I could also run VCD's on it as well. I just wanted to know which looks and sounds better so I could have the best experience on my PC.

VCD's allow 5.1 surround sound, I know that. I found a German language page on how to do it, I don't know if I bookmarked it or not. And actually I think it was for XVCD because that's what I was searching for when I found it.

I'm not sure about surround sound for DivX but I downloaded a few that seem to have surround sound, unless my sound card is just uber good at sampling sounds and knowing which speaker they should come from.

If it's for your PC then go with DivX, but I think, generally speaking, VCD is less hassle and better visual/audio. Why not just keep the ripped DVD files on your computer and watch them through WinDVD or something, that way you've got them in perfect DVD quality without worrying about compression. Just ZIP em. :lol:
