Dell Axim, Viewsonic, Toshiba, or iPaq?? (My first PPC)

Dell Axim, Viewsonic, Toshiba, or iPaq?? (My first PPC)

Postby imported » Feb 16, 2003 @ 5:18am

Hey, how's it going?

I have about $400 saved up and I was wondering which pocket pc should I buy?? I'm looking at the lower end PPCs from Dell, Viewsonic, iPaq H1910, and the Toshiba e740. I plan on listening to mp3s, playing games, viewing webpages (WiFi 802.11b,) most importantly I want to be able to watch mpeg movies. I need a PPC with the best screen and video quality and built in WiFi or at least a CF slot for a WiFi card. I know the Toshiba e740 has a retail price from $500 to $600, but I found a few sites that sell them for about $350. The only problem is that it's refurbished, but I believe still come with a warranty. Finally should I spend an extra $100 for a Dell axim with 400mhz? Or should I settle for a 300mhz axim? Which PPC should I buy that meets my needs?

Thanks

I'd get the Dell and add on a WiFi CF card seperately. You can get the 300MHz Axim and overclock it to 400MHz via free overclocking software, or you could buy the 400MHz version to begin with (which can be overclocked to 472MHz) which is what I would do.

I say go with the Dell X5 Advanced. All Toshibas are horrible for playing games. The H1910 is too slow to play videos, and the Viewsonic is, well... nothing special and too expensive for that nothing specialness it possess, especially when you can get the Dell 400MHz for the same price and it has more RAM and a faster cpu and more expansion.

Malebolgia breathes undead life into the charred corpse of all of those who don't understand. I now mutate into a demonic alter-ego of his own.

All Toshiba devices have a serious problem with the hardware buttons. There is an input lag of about 333ms on all the buttons on the device, including the DPad. So gaming is out of the question. And the e740 with the ATI Imageon chip is the best for video by far but runs all games much slower. The chip is specialized for mpeg video decoding only and thus is the worst for video games. Some PocketPC developers won't even release their software for the Toshiba e740 because it would run so slow because ATI and Toshiba did a horrible job with that device.

video isnt horrible, and the VGA line out isnt either. i think one of the best PPCs out there is the Toshiba e740, if it wasnt cuz WE, use PPCs for games and entertainment instead work.
