[Sam and Max]Speech is sooo slow

[Sam and Max]Speech is sooo slow

Postby Khronos » Aug 18, 2003 @ 8:45am

Hi all,

I just installed Sam and Max on my Toshiba e350 (300 MHz XScale), both pocketScumm and the 80Meg of the game (and that really big sound file MONSTER.SOG) on a 256 Mo SD Card.

The game and the music look fluid, however the speeches is soooo slooooow, like 2 ou 3 times slower than normal speed making all speeches quite painful. I think my pocket PC is powerful enough to handle speech decompression so I really don't know what the problem is (maybe try a SOG to mp3 converter but I haven't found any, than sample with a smaller bitrate ?). I would have liked to put sam and max in pocketPC memory just to test access times but -of course- it is too big.

Anyone has a hint ?

Cheers :)

Read SirDave's PocketScumm Mini-Manual.
My converted Monster.so3 is only 30.2MB and nothing
wrong with the speech.

I had already read the manuel and downloaded the SOU to MP3 converter.

But the problem is that i don't have a monster.sou file but a 65Mb monster.sog file. Hence when i try to use SOU2MP3 it says "invalid SOU file" (even if I rename the file to monster.sou)... :(

Any idea ? (or any way i could get the 30 mb compressed monster.so3 file ?)

Anyway tnx for your quick answer.

OK, I've now converted my monster.sou to mp3.... (monster.so3) setting:

extract -q 0 -B 32 monster.sou

Result: noise instead of sound samples and crash. (crap I can't seem to reproduce the crash anymore!)

Very bizarre. It tries to play a sample but it plays loud static.

I did consider that maybe pocketscumm still thought it was playing the .sog file but even after removing the scumm config file and rescanning it didnt help.

Help?
