Don't worry too much about the registry.
You can use like to "associate" .dat files with your Pocket PC text editor. It's free, easy, and safer since you don't have to mess with your registry.
Don't worry about messing up the dat files. You probably won't. If I were you, I would make a backup copy of the dat file and put it somewhere else. Then, if you mess-up and you can't figure out what you did wrong, you can always delete (or move) your modified dat file and copy over your backup dat file and make sure that it is named the right thing and that it is in the right folder. Or, you could just re-install snails.
I tried to make these instructions pretty easy to follow. The dat files themselves are easy to modify correctly and explain themselves. A pre-teen could understand them! Modifying them is pre-teen's play. Ummm... That's all that I can think of...
