Compatibility mode is a old windows term- it's when you turn the processor down to 200 mhz (only available on a few pcs, like the Toshiba Genio E550G).
It's because XP will run as Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME if you want it to. (Just click the properties, click options, and change the program to load with windows 95 comptibility mode, where Windows 95 is the mode you want it to run in.)
