Sorry, I missed the question, when I was responding to others earlier.
The best way to tell if you are connected to the server is to tap on deathmatch from the title screen, then tap on network multi-snailer, then start, then done, and done again; Then, if you have your PC nearby (or even another PPC with internet access) go to
If your PPC/PC is connected, you will see your name and the level you are waiting to play on under the Snails Internet Gaming Statistics.
Such as here:
If your name and level is not displayed here, then that means that you are not connected to the server (possibly due to a firewall or something else blocking the gateway). If nothing is being diaplayed here, then that means that no one is connected to the main Snails server.
However, if you have another person in your local network, or connected via Wifi/BT AdHoc, you can simply tap on the search button suring the 'Select a Game you would like to join' This will display any users in the area that areconnected and have already started a game (and are waiting for another to connect). If you see another player in this window, then all you have to do is tap on the game you would like to join and then tap on the Connect button.
