Tutorial for CREATING Snails Levels?

We have some good tutorial information on installing custom snails levels (or at least some good dialog about it), but I'd love to see a tutorial on how to actually createcustom levels. This would need to (for me) be veryexplicit as to how to do it, and include how to set things up within graphics programs. I have some graphic design experience, so that's not as much of a problem, but the how to would be extremely helpful.

go to snails.pocketmatrix.com and click on the link near the top of the page. You can also go the snailsgame.com and look at the directions in the members section.

I don't understand what there's not to get. Isn't it just a foreground image, a background image, and a mask that shows the solid areas?

"Magenta on the foreground picture indicates transparency. Magenta is #ff00ff or r255 g0 b255" - What does that mean?

"Edit the levels.dat file" - What does that mean? What do I need to edit with it?

I tried following these as best as I could understand them, to no avail.
