Review: Argentum

Review: Argentum

Postby Chris Edwards » Apr 29, 2002 @ 9:51pm

"Argentum (Ag). It's more than a game. It's more than an RTS game. It's more than a Pocket PC game. It is, I would argue, the first commercial grade entertainment title for the Pocket PC. Now, before you get you knickers in a bunch over that statement, allow me to explain how, like all the commercial titles for the PC, Argentum fits the bill. Let's look at the lifecycle of Ag to-date..."

I also disagree with that claim. Chopper Alley should hold that spot, whether you like the game or not is not an issue.

CA is lacking some things that AG features. But CA was released a year ago, in a time when there was nothing to compare it to. Undeniably there was nothing to touch it at the time, in fact most of the hit games have followed that basic model of professionality and tried to improve on it.

I still don't understand that comment, because Hyperspace Delivery Boy even seemed to be "commercial grade" to me.

So while AG can rightlfully hold the title of a commercial grade product, I don't think it can hold the title of the "first".

I promised myself I wouldn't defend anything I said in the review, because it would lead to endless rants in the forums. So, that's why I am being more quiet than usual.

I will, however, say that we are all entitled to out oppinions, though I tried to stick to facts as much as I could.

By way of defense for my statement, I refer you back to the review itself. I wanted to go into more detail, but there wasn't the time or the space to do it this weekend.

There is more to commercial grade than shear quality of gameplay. For instance, Chopper Alley is a fun game, with great graphics. But is the menu system really that spiffy or well refined? Does it give you that 'polished' feeling when you install and play it? Does it feel like a game put out by a company or a game put out by a kid in a garage? And H S DeliveryBoy, well, maybe it is the company type, and maybe it is polished, but did it have the hype? Or the quality of play? Or the graphics?

There is no single thing that makes it 'commercial grade', and indeed that is nebulous in and of itself. The point being the AG has the quality, the polish, and the politics of a real-deal, full-fledged game.
