It might tell you what the problem was in the system event log?
I don't know about XP, but on Windows 2000, I'd enable the blue-screen so you knew exactly what's crashing:
My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery->System Failure
.. uncheck "automatically reboot".
Then try again and see what it tells you crashed on the blue-screen (if you're really lucky it'll be a display driver or something simple you can update).
The emulators seem totally cursed when I use them though... so I tend not to.
