Feedback on x86 emulator

Re: Feedback on x86 emulator

I don't remember. At one time I was searching all over the place for Bochs docs / tools, so I don't remember where I got it from. Here's the contents of the BAT file:

[fixed]
@REM MCOPYDIR source destination
@REM source = directory to copy
@REM destination = directory in image file to which source should be copied
@ECHO Changing to image file directory %2
@mtools -c mcd %2
@ECHO Making image file directory %1
@mtools -c mmd %1
@ECHO Copying files in local directory %1 to image file directory %2\%1
@for %%f in (%1\*.*) do mtools -c mcopy %%f %2
@ECHO Done! Directory listing in new directory on image file is as follows:
@mtools -c mdir %2\%1
[/fixed]

Dan East

Grrr, the bat file didn't make things better, guess I'll wait til I get my CD-burner and the try to get the CD-drivers to work...eventually...maybe not...or I try to get a better tool to make img files...or I try to learn mtools ;D

Phew, after far over an hour of installing win95, is the result.
It's quite slow on my P3 800, 128Mb RAM (I let bochs emulate 32 megs). Wonder how slow it would be on a PPC then ;)
I set it up on a 200Mb disk image, but the install size (normal install) is 79 megs, so I assume it will fit nicely on a CF memcard.

Mzguy, it would really help out many people in the future (and the very curious ones now) if you could write up a quick how-to on setting up bochs with the disk image and all. :)

Oh ya, made it as soon as I could :)
...and if someone tries it out in win9x/ME, let me know if the physical drive access work, so I can write it there too.
I guess this is what you'd like to do with the x86 emu ;D
It took several minutes before the Palm emulator popped up and even longer before I could do something with it :( , and that's on a desktop PC, so I guess you won't find much use in this on the PPC.

lol.. well i dont think anyone honestly wanted to run any palm emulators inside of windows95 in an x86 emulator.. well maybe. but i guess that the palm emulator for pocketpc being developed by pdafantast will conquer that one. whats funny is that you could develop games (albeit slowly) for the palm or ppc on your ppc....

I love you Dan! Dan is the Man!

When are you going to release a public alpha or beta version? I don't want to bug you, but... Yeah, actually I do kinda want to bug you. I'm just curious as to whether progress is being done or not. I mean, people here have done all this work with Bochs just because you've asked them to.

What I am trying to say is that some people here would bend over backwards for you because you are just too cool. They love people who port stuff like Quake and an x86 emulator. We're just dieing to see this released.

But, I don't want to be mean or whiney or annoying. I just think this is the coolest thing. How about some info?

Still looking for a good disk image program anyone... I reccomend winimage. Its an excellent windows based-based proggie that's easy to use and quite powerful. Don't know why nobody's come across it yet, as its been around for quite some time...

http://www.winimage.com/

A few things:

Jaybot, I tried downloading that benchmark software, but their FTP server only allows 4 anonymous connects at a time, so I haven't been able to download it.

dthomas1950, if you have a basic benchmark program then please send it to dan@naxs.com.

I've got partial VGA graphic support going. Actually it works completely, but will not fit on a 240x320 Pocket PC display. What I'm asking for is someone to find / compile a list of the resolutions of the VGA graphic modes. I will have to scale the display according to what VGA mode is used. There are VGA modes that will fit on a landscape Pocket PC display at a 1:1 pixel ratio. Others will require a sub-pixel technique to "increase" the resolution of the display, just as JSLandscape does. If anyone has an algorithm to increase the effective resolution using sub-pixels, please send it along (Mark Rejhon?) (480x320 and 640x480).

Thanks!!

Dan East
