Dan, Where's PocketDoom ???

Postby TechMage » Aug 20, 2002 @ 2:08am

Does it play the Doom music? The only thing I hate about Doom4CE (Jimmy's Doom) is that it does not play the Doom music.

Ahh, I see. No one has made a MIDI driver for Pocket PC? That's strange. MIDI was quite the deal back in the day. Infact I think MIDI would be in high demand for Pocket PC, being as it is a small sized format, that's great for low end games (which all PPC games are).

but MIDI on a pocketpc would require extra hardware or so ive heard..

and yes they have really small file sizes like chrono trigger music that 4minutes long but is only 10KB....

Yes, as the other thread said, there's always PocketMIDI, but that requires large Timidity soundbanks, and I suspect the CPU usage is high.

[edit] Looking at Mimidi, CPU usage is quite low, but the audio quality is horrible compared to fmod, which is a better format for games, etc, which I guess is what stops us from getting a decent MIDI lib.

Yup...I would like to support MIDI music, but im yet to find a MIDI player I can use. Can mus files be converted to mod? I can use ModPlayerCE then. I've tried MiMidi. It's really good as it only takes up a few kb of space and only about ~5% CPU (133Mhz SH-3)
Would love the sources to that!!! (Or the .lib files and headers to the dll)

Here is a first release of gfDoom( )

ARM (Ipaq etc) http://home.freeuk.com/gamefreaks/ARM.zip

MIPS (Casio's) http://home.freeuk.com/gamefreaks/MIPS.zip

post your comments below. (installation instructions are in the readme, just put your IWAD in a folder called 'Doom' (on a storage card if you wish))

get an iwad here: http://www.jimmysoftware.com/software/d ... om1wad.zip

Click on "MID2XM" for a program to convert MIDI to XM format.

Confirmation on iPaq H3955... gfDoom works. It seems to run slightly slower than JimmyDoom and when I switch the graphics detail to low it goes into landscape mode but the graphics are all messed up. It looks like what happens you you unclip and walk outside of a wall but all the time. Great controls scheme in landscape, too. Although I'd make record fire and the contacts button open doors, calendar open menu by default. And don't forget strafe!!! I think the action button should be strafe, that would work great in landscape mode with the odd shaped dpad.

Not a single crash yet. Clean entrance and exit of the game. Everything looks great except it's a tad slower and the graphics when set to "low" are messed up, and why is "low" landscape, btw? :D

Did you notice that Doom4CE just clips the screen?
gfDoom scales it. That will be the reason for the speed decrease. How fast is it? It's fine on my e310 on Doom and DoomII. I could just clip the screen? Would that be prefered? (I suppose I should offer both really!)

The graphics problems sound like they are not blitting issues.
Did you scale the screen up or down? (The plus and minus buttons) There is currently a bug with them which occasionaly causes exactly this problem!
