No, it just not worth the effort. Ulima 7 is such a small game by today's standards, downloading it off of some site would be very easy. And while we can implement the same security measures as the original game did (manual checks), it could limit the actual end-user market to only those who have purchased the game with the manual and still have it around...

The 'security check' in Ultima 7 was fairly simple. To get out of the first town, Trinsic, you have to answer some questions the mayor has. For example: What is the latitude of Bucaneer's Den. The original game came with a cloth map in the box, and you were supposed to figure it out on that... I remember the numbers on mine being smudged out..<br><br>Since it is just a conversation in the game, it is the exact same in Exult. I don't think you would want to try to remove this security check, and anyways the answers are available on the official U7 website! Besides, I don't even think it is part of the Exult code, I think it is stored in some U7 data file. It would require lots of hacking to get rid of :)<br><br>

well, I think someone needs to take a look at the source code and see what needs to be done, and post it here.

If you port the source code to a commercial product (such as Quake), then there is no legal issue at all. As long as the existing security mechanism is in place everything is fine. With Exult it is a different matter, as it is a clone and not a port. In that case, again, at least the original security mechanisms should be duplicated. Emulators are yet another issue. IMO, there is nothing wrong with emulating hardware. However, there are usually two problems:<br><br>1) Many devices have an OS which is in ROM (Palm Pilot, HP Calculators, etc). That ROM is required for the emulator to be of use. It is possible to dump the ROM legally if you own the real hardware, but in most cases it is distributed illegally.<br><br>2) Other types of hardware (consoles, etc) only run ROMs (even though the actual computer hardware may not have a ROM of its own). In that case of course the ROMs are distributed illegally. Again, it's a very fine line. A few days ago I actually found my original Gameboy I bought when they first came out in 1989. The hardware (display) sucks so terribly bad it's almost useless. It is not that anything is wrong with it - that's just the way it was designed. So I benefit greatly playing the carts I own on my iPaq, where I can actually see what's going on. <br><br>Dan East

Okay, a little old to be bumping, but whatever :)

I'd like to help (assuming this project hasn't gone kaput, which it probably has), but probably all I can do is the readme/help files and the web site (trust me, I can do much better work than on my Snails site; I just wanted to get everything up and running quickly)

Just a thought - has anyone thought of the benefits of implementing a library such as libsdl on the PPC? For the better written projects out there using such libraries (ie the ones that correctly seperate graphics/sound/interface code from program logic), we could have almost immediate turnover of SDL/[insert library here] applications.

What you all think?
