DevReq: Wikipedia Database Reader

DevReq: Wikipedia Database Reader

Postby suchiaruzu » Jun 26, 2004 @ 10:37pm

I was just wondering, there are three ways of reading the , that fabulous online encyclopedia on a Pocket PC: MobiPocket Reader (slow), TomeRaider (expensive) and mDict (messes up the format). I talked to László the other night, and he said technically a "real" encyclopedia app would be no problem, especially with the extensive format documentation availible in the Wikipedia.

As you have probably all guessed by now, I am thinking of a "real", free, dedicated Wikipedia Reader for Pocket PCs. It would be great if it could read the data files from a compressed format. It would be beyond awsome if it could display TeX. It would be a neccessity to be able to bind it to a hotkey and have an instant lookup feature (much like the one used in MS Reader - or MDict for that matter, if it only didn't mess up all the time ... wasnt made for wiki, you get the point i am trying to make...). I am more than willing, yes, I am begging to help with the UI of this.

In case anyone is interested in this project, be it as a test run, to expand your coding knowledge, because you would like to see it as well or simply because you want to have something else to do - please do post here or contact me on any Instant Messenger or by email. I am more than willing to provide what I can to push this endavour.

Additionally, support for the Wiktionary would be nice, but it does not have to be supported from the start. Pictures (except for Tex) would take up too much space for the beginning. Incorporating them, say, for flags or maps would be an option nevertheless.

So, uhm...post thoughts here, I guess? I would really love to see this happen, and - again - I am willing to do my utmost to push this!

It may be easier to obtain the SQL backup files and export them into a proprietary format, instead of trying to work off of the TomeRaider format.
