Why does everyone opt for traditional 2D over Isometric?

With the exception of the EverQuest games, I have not seen any others using isometric tiling. I was curious as to why? Do most gamers like to use the D-Pad rather than stylus clicking? That's the only plausible reason I can think of. With traditional 2D tiling, the D-Pad is perfect for movement. With isometric, the stylus is almost required, because moving with the D-Pad could be a bit quirky.

If you've chosen traditional 2D tiling over isometric tiling, perhaps you could clue me in. Thanks! 8)

Well, that's obvious enough. :) But seriously though, there's no other reason? I know PDAmill has the talent, yet they opted for basic 2D tiling for their latest RPG, Arvale. In fact I find the graphics quite flat and non-pleasing. It's interesting that someone would go with that approach when isometric is, in general, superior (at least on the PC).

Thanks for your time.

I totally agree that the amount of artwork is the main problem. I started making a diablo esque isometric tile game and then realised how much artwork it would require me to make. Not only does the ppc have small amounts of storage, i would need a team of artists to get anything done in a reasonable amount of time.
