Are their any programs that can convert MIDI files into MOD files? If not what type of sound file formats can be converted into MOD?

MOD files are music files that store sample information, and information on playing them (patterns, notes, etc). MODs can contain instruments that vary wildly e.g one MOD may have only 4 drums, while another may contain a full orchestra of instruments.
MID files contain no sample data and only contain instructions on which notes to play on pre-set instruments, e.g g# on instrument 1 (which is a piano sound on all MIDI devices, although the actual piano sound differs depending on soundcard).
Therefore, as the two formats are very different, conversion between the two isn't really possible. Even if there were a useable program, you would still need to find/record samples that sounded exactly like the MIDI's instruments used in the original song. I have come across 1 or 2 programs over the years that attempted to do it, but none really suceeded .
To my knowledge, no sound formats can be converted to MOD (excluding MOD variants like .S3M, .XM), due to it's uniqueness. Still, if you have any luck, i would definitely be interested!

Yes!! ModPlug (just one of the many trackers our there), imports MID files, and even their SF2 soundfonts. You can then save the file as an XM. How to turn this into a MOD, I don't know. I've got a feeling MikMod can play XM files, but haven't checked.
As far as the importing goes, I've given it a quick test and it seems to work, although many of the things like pitch bends and sample changes don't convert well.
You can download ModPlug and lots of other converters from

Wow! I've been using Modplug for AGES and i've never noticed that feature! The results aren't brilliant, but it sure is something to work with. Defintely useful to know, though, as it does a better job than the convertors i mentioned. Man, i really should play with menus in programs more...
