Emedded Visual Tools 4.0?

According to;

http://msdn.microsoft.com/chats/

under the "eMbedded Visual C++" heading it says;

"Version 4.0 has recently been released to enable C++ application development for Windows CE .NET devices"

Admittedly its a chat reminder for March 25th..does that mean that the release is imminent?

Just wondering, does anyone know any more about this?

regards.

I'm guessing it's available so that developers can start working on ce.net apps. Although i'm not sure if the app would run perfectly as intended on a ce.net device, as ce.net is the framework for a future PPC os, just like WinCE 3.0 is. I.e An app written for PPC devices based on WinCE 3.0 may not run the same on a HPC based on WinCE 3.0. Just a guess though.

Dunno about an immenent release of ce.net, although it'd be a nice surprise! :)

I got this reply from someone called Mike on the windowsce.embedded.ce newsgroup;

>If you are working on wince 3.0 based systems (e.g.
>pocket pc) or before then you don't want evc++4.0, >it's for ce.net only and can not use the previous >sdks.

>If you are using a ce.Net platform then you can get

I am not very happy about this. I was looking forward to better compiler support for templates. It looks like Microsoft are effectively forcing people to adopt the ce.NET platform by no longer upgrading their compiler for Windows CE 3.0. This is great. Either develop with the Pocket PC 2002 SDK for a platform that is soon to be obsolete, or develop for ce.NET when consumer devices don't even exist yet.

Is there not a plan to encorporate the .Net framework into PPC2002? I mean, I just assumed it would be shipped along with the dev platform.

Hrm...I don't know why they would do that. You can slap the .NET framework onto any XP/2K box with the greatest of ease and code away. Why would they not just do the same for PPC.

I am not disputing your claims btw, I am just a little miffed that MS would screw the PPC community like that. Seems stupid.
