Slashdot is reporting that the source code has been released under the GPL. Just thought that this might be of interest to people here...

Ya, that game was kind of really stupid.

It did? It had jumping even before Doom did, multilevel terrain, varying wall angels, lifts, flying, doors... I'm pretty sure it's an original engine. But I have no informed idea. Maybe it is heavily modified Wolf3D engine.

I have never heard of the game before, so I'm purely speculating, but if it was derived from Wolf3D, or is of the same era, then it will likely contain a substantial amount of x86 assembly.

No, it had one ceiling size per level, and orthagonal walls.

However 3DR's forums are down as I write this at 1:30 in the morning.

Heh, kinda hard to see that it just uses an improved Wolf3D engine, though. It has more features than Doom.
I hope someone ports this over to the PPC

It looks like a really exciting project! As long as there is no X86 asm then it 'should' be a reasonably sucessful port. Looks like it'll get decent framerate on a ARM or XScale, and the sytem requirements are simelar to Doom.
The only thing being is that it's not anywhere near as popular as Doom so would anyone appriciate the effort?
Any takers?

ROTT used the Wolf3D engine. They licensed it from iD (Or was it Apogee that owned it, can't recall) and then they heavily modified it. Unfortunately, in classic 3DRealms style, they took to long and Doom came out 2 years before ROTT did. Needless to say people weren't all that impressed with ROTT.

It's a post Doom2 game, but I think before Duke3D. I don't know my FPS timeline too well, I remember everyone talking about this game when I was in 4th grade or something like that. Hrmm... I'd rather have a full Wolfenstein3D port with sound than this abysmal blood and gore Mortal Kombat 2 era FPS.

Here's the details on ROTT. Was originally going to be Wolf2

Hosed: Nice explanation, said it bter than I ever could :P
If the port isn't too much trouble, I'd say go for it! It's a game you either love or hate, and it DOES have quite a bit of a cult following.
The sound system is still using MIDAS if I recall correctly, so the same issue of sound in the PPC version would stand.
