Start with the original GTA. GTA2 required a 3D card.

The Physics in the game were quite cool. Each car had like 40 attributes tied to it (I use to modify GTA and insert my own creations). The scripting language was badass and basically controlled every aspect of the game. It would open up a whole lot of opportunity for mods.

I don't see this as a realistic endeavor without the source code though.

no, it carried over to GTA2 as well. But you can't change those attributes unless you edit the game files (it wasn't an option).

Anyway, GTA/GTA2 was ported to gameboy a while ago. A very poor rendition of the game if you ask me - the maps were still huge but the hardware lacked the ability to have all the cars and people on the roads like the original.

Hopefully Rockstar (I think that is the developer) will grab a clue and port GTA in its entirety.

Okay, good news:
Image
The in-game resolution is 320*200
Bad news: The main screen is 640*480. Dan said something about sub pixel stuff. I hope that would work...
