Anyone hear if any / all of the Pocket PC 2002 devices support hardware serial numbers? Currently the iPaq is the only Pocket PC that supports it. Does the @migo support them?

Thanks!

Dan East

I hope that's one of the things MS enforced on the OEMs for PPC 2002...

Dan East

I know that the old and new iPAQ does (I read that somewhere), but I don't know about the others.
BTW, what's the benefit of that?

Dan sent me a test for my @migo, looks like it isnt hardware serial number compatible. I guess we will have to wait and see for the newer models.

But Dan, there's PPC2002 files floating around on the net even before Compaq officialy put it on sale.

It's still possible that UR There provides a custom API that exposes a serial number. I'm looking into their developer network thing.

Dan East

Why are you focusing your attention on the @migos?

I'm not focusing on any particular device. It is known that Casio and HP (non Pocket PC 2002) do not support ESN. I was curious if the @migo did as it was very similar to the iPaq hardware in every other way. I'm now looking into the Pocket PC 2002 generation hardware to see which of those models support ESNs.
So far it looks like Compaq is the only company looking out for developers by supporting Electronic Serial Numbers.

Dan East

this is an excerpt of the PocketPC Devewlopement FAQ from the MS website:

How can I read the serial number of my Pocket PC?

You can’t, really. Although Windows CE does support unique serial numbers, the Pocket PC OEMs jointly decided not to support this feature. The reason is expense: every Pocket PC would have to get an individual Windows CE image including the serial number, which would require extra manufacturing procedures.

If you need individual serial numbers I recommend using CompactFlash™ cards from SanDisk, Kingston Technology, or IBM. CompactFlash cards do have unique serial numbers and can be read pretty easily. Chapter 11 of the book “The Windows CE Technology Tutorial,” by Chris Muench and Randolph Kath, explains the procedure in detail.
