as far as I know all strongarm PPCs use 16bpp mode, althrought their screens display only 12bpp (so 4 bits per color R,G,B value)
Other PPCs either use normal 16bpp, or 256 color/greyscale modes (or even less color modes - v.old ones)

Indeed, most PPC's have 16bit displays, at least to the programmer. That means, the internal screen buffer is 16bit (5-6-5 RGB) on pretty much every system. There are two rare exceptions: The iPaq 3100, wich has a 4-bit monochrome display, and one of the older Jornada PPC's, wich has a 256 color display. The 4-bit display is easy to emulate; the 256 color display is much harder and thus often ignored.
