PL34SE PROT HALF-LIFE AND C0unTER-STR1k3, w00t!!!

Postby sponge » Jul 29, 2003 @ 7:33pm

Guess what, in the future there will be 100% simulations of the world, on a PC the size of a thumbnail? So should we start making it now?

Reason all you want, IT'S STILL NOT TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE. Just beacuse id releases source code doesn't mean Valve will.

It took 3 or so years to double processor speed, and performance isn't double.

It also took 5 or so years to reach 1GB.

Even though it will be possible in the future, you've got entirely wrong facts.
holy internets batman.

@all:
as mentioned above, the "code" released of halflife is only to make your own mod's/add-on's/whatever.

@james sonne:
>>If the engine source code were freely
>>downloadable, valve would have no income.
interesting; than you imply that ID software makes no money with their quake 2 ? for sure ? quake 2 is still sells until today...

wait a few month, than a 1GB memory card will be standard, and you will "lick your fingers after bigger games", because a game like halflife is then nothing more than a peanut; there will be games like "enemy territory" (RtCW mod), Diablo II (i think you know it) or warcraft III and the data of each of this game is widely more than the one of halflife.

regarding your FPS problem:
the current version of windows CE seems to make some boundaries while accessing/utilizing the complete power of intels XScale CPU; the world is waiting for an update from microsoft. think for yourself dude:
you'd like to tell me, that it is a hardware-performance issue if quakeI/quakeII runs with 1/2/3FPS (as you told) on a RISC (!!!) CPU, running at 400Mhz, if the same games runs without 3D acceleration (!!!) on a 233Mhz standard PC, with a CISC CPUby 25fps ??? *rofl* it seems that you have no idea of processor/software structure/architecture.

ADD ON:
@james sonne:
and no (!), the code of duke nukem 3D has not been <insert-favorite-word-here> by the timie-space continuum. you can download it at various websites.

@alexbaker
When I said valve would make no money if the HL engine source code was released I was saying that because their only source of income is selling the source code to the HL engine. They'd go bankrupt within two months of releasing the source code for free unless they have some new game and some new engine available at the time to compensate.

@alexbaker
1GB memory cards have been available for two years. I'm sure you're the master of the universe, though, and have the power to make the price drop below $400 to make them "standard." 1GB memory cards cost more than most PocketPCs, cost more than many DESKTOP computers! Optimism only breeds disappointment and speculative banter.

@alexbaker
We were talking (!) about the original 2D side scrolling shooter Duke Nukem, not Duke Nukem 3D.

Heres the way to fix this problem, simply drool over the future when you have hl's source and the memory to store and run the game. Until then, lets complain about pq2's slow framerate :)
Organic Superlube? Oh, it's great stuff, great stuff. You really have to keep an eye on it, though--it'll try and slide away from you the first chance it gets.
