Lose the landscape?

Lose the landscape?

Postby swooby » Mar 30, 2001 @ 10:36pm

This should be a good topic for debate:
Lose the landscape mode! :)

I only recommend losing the landscape mode because of software like that at www.jimmysoftware.com that add native landscape mode to the whole OS.
It seems redundant to have an application shift into landscape mode when the OS already is (it is really apparent when you use the cursor buttons...the landscaped OS rotates the cursor controls and the pQuake rotates it right back again).
PLUS, jimmysoftware supports 640x480 in landscape mode!
That would probably drag the FPS to a halt, but it is a good indicator of things to come.
FYI: WinCE v4.0 (aka: Talisker) *WILL* have native landscape abilities. With that in mind it makes little sense to hard code that ability directly into pQuake.

Currently it makes sense because:

1. Not everyone owns JS Landscape, or even cares to buy it.

2. Native landscape is not available for the current OS for which PocketQuake is written.

Yeah, it's not the best idea to get rid of it... remember PQ is free, JS landscape is not. besides, it's not harming anything.. it's not like it's making the program 200k bigger.. and if it's such a pain in the ass for you to control, try turning off JS Landscape. :)

Uhm, you can't turn on JS Landscape and them play PQ like that. The skin would still show, I don't even know that it would still work, and the buttons wouldn't automatically be changed for the sideways view. (Do they do that now)

Besides the stated fact that PQ doesn't work with Jimmy Landscape (because PQ directly accesses the display hardware), I can see the positive response to such a change in 0.06:
"New feature - we removed landscape support! And, I'm working hard at removing sound support for 0.07!"

Dan East

Pffft...

If you really rocked Dan, you'd remove these damned polygons that keep getting in the way of that beautifully rolling sky backdrop. Oh yea, take the monsters out too, they're jerks...

LOL..... those damn polygons, always in my way of trying to watch the pretty sky....

oh, JS does automatically flip the D-pad and PQ does work with the new version of JS landscape, because it allows for GAPI programs to work with it on now, so this is correct, however, the screen still shows up the same size (obviously) but the 999s bitmap will show up at whatever res wince wants it to, i.e. too small to be useable and usually directly under the actual gamescreen.
