RA-

Postby randall » May 27, 2001 @ 6:52pm

999 - I finally got RocketArena working on my device. I had to do some serious tweaking to get it to run on my Casio. I have a newfound respect for Chuck if he was able to get it going. :)

I am working on an Arena-type map right now, and may need some info about making it RA compliant. Mostly it has to do with teleport destinations and the spawnpoints.

Can I make it DM and RA? It seems like you should be able to.

Last modification: randall - 05/27/01 at 15:52:42

Heyas Randall,

Yea, you can make DM and RA outta the same map, just check out the RocketArena homepage (sorry url slips my mind right now) for the requirements.

From what I remember, the actual player start entities are where you enter the spectator's area. Then, you use normal teleport destinations entities in the arena for players to spawn.

Now that you've got RA working, have a go with RailArena. It's pretty cool, it's like 1 hit 1 kill in GoldenEye :)

The best part about making RA maps is no item placement headaches!

Well, I am making maps for multi-use now. So there will still be some item placement involved.

So if the player spawnpoints are in the observation area, how does that work for DM? Won't the players be stuck in there?

I've had a go with Devise.bsp . I like the way the observation area has a window overlooking the arena. Aren't rockets able to go through that opening and kill spectators? Or are observers not able to be killed.

Sorry, I could probably invest a couple hours to figure this out myself, but I'm trying to get all my current project wrapped up.

My new site will be up soon. :)

Oh, about RailArena (I'll check that out later), how does the 1 hit 1 kill work? Does it count shooting a player in the foot as a kill, or does it have to be a hit in a critical area like a chest or headshot?

A rail can hit you anywhere and kill you pretty much.

As for the spectators getting hit by rockets, it doesnt matter, they are invulnerable, and it passes right through them. They're kinda pain, because you have to make them tall enough to place your spawn points about a Quake Guy and a half's distance high. This will keep two players from spawning into eachother and getting stuck. When the first guy spawns, he falls from gravity, so the next player just lands on top. I place about 3 spectator spawn points in each room.

For getting dual usage from the maps, you do have to make two versions, but overall you *are* getting dual usage from the same layout. You're only altering the spawn entities.

Devise is a RailArena map, I just so happened to throw it into the RocketArena map cycle to keep things interesting.

I guess I kind of knew there would have to be two different versions of the same map.

That kind of bums me out though- because my maps tend to be large (at least half a meg each) due to the large number of textures I use. Even though most textures are 64x64, they tend to add up quickly.

So in order for someone to play Deathmatch AND RA versions of my maps it would exceed 1 meg.

I'll have to toss that around for a while.
