Can't get it working!

Can't get it working!

Postby ViPER » May 19, 2001 @ 3:26am

Ok, I'm trying to get PQ to run with a low memory pak by paul and nightmare, and this is what i have done...
copy pak0.pak.gz from the zip file into /quake/id1
copy autoexec.cfg from the 0.061 PQ zip file to /quake/id1
copy pocketquake to /quake/
made a shortcut

it gives some message about needing the registered version to use modified paks!! but that's the point of the low mem pak right... so we don't need pak1.pak from quake1... it requires 17MB! someone please help...

The purpose of the compact PAK file is to eliminate all the crap you DON'T need. But in order to benefit from this, you MUST have a registered version of Quake (PAK1.PAK).

PAK1.PAK can be slimmed down as well. Remove ALL the .BSP (map files) except the ones that start with b_ .

The only file in PAK1.PAK you really need is GFX/POP.LMP, since that is the only file that tells Quake that it is registered. PAK1.PAK also contains a few models and sounds if I remember correctly. You'll need those as well if you want to play any SinglePlayer games (Kustok.bsp uses a couple monsters from the PAK1.PAK)

Put both compact versions of the PAKs on your device and you're good to go.

If you don't own the registered version of Quake then there's nothing much you can do. Really there isn't much excuse for not owning Quake since it is so cheap (I have seen it for $5 - $10)

Last modification: randall - 05/19/01 at 01:53:28

http://devastation3.com

somewhere near the bottom (under tools and editors) is a download called Qped2- it is a PAK explorer. Download it from there.

The site is still under construction, so some of the links might not work. I just verified that the QPED2 LINK WORKS.

Last modification: randall - 05/27/01 at 15:38:55
