CTF update

CTF update

Postby Matt Keys » May 28, 2001 @ 1:41pm

Well I have one map about 90% finished with the help of randall, and I made a second the other day. They look pretty cool and all is well except this one problem I encountered. The bots dont know where the flags are. You see, the CTF package came with 8 maps and in the CTF code the "waypoints" for the flags were coded in. So when I create another map and run it with the CTF, the bots just kill you and never go after the flag. But there is a way to get the waypoints for my maps into the bot code. The problem, I dont know how to program. So I am asking for some help on this one. Any takers email me or post on this board.

Dammit... You moved this thread on me while I was trying to get informations for you. LOL. I had to go track it down since it originally started in the Developer Forum. :)<br><br>Anyway, I think the CTF bot has "CTF building kit" included with it. By this I mean that you can PLAY the map, and while you are running through it you can place a flag or bot waypoint. It's actually quite easy, and prefereable to editing in Worldcraft and recompiling.<br><br>It requires certain keys to be bound, and I think the CTF bot I sent back to you only has a couple of keys enabled. (spawnbot, killbot...). I'll have to look at the CTFbot again.<br><br>Last modification: randall - 05/28/01 at 12:16:17

Waypoints are a bitch, mainly because I've never done them ;)<br><br>I've seen some wysywig programs out there for the inadequate like myself, but have yet to actually try them.<br><br>My reason is, I've settled on bots which learn the map as they play, as well as my patterns. This gives you a more natural "client bot" feel, rather than bots following tracks.<br>

CTF requires a specific bot and a waypoint system. They won't go finding the flag, even if they are told to do so. They'll wander around the map and may accidently stumble upon it after a few hours, but who has that kind of time?<br><br>Matts map really needs waypoints, because It is on two levels, with doors and teleports. The bots aren't smart enough to wade through all that.<br><br>The only problem is, if the waypoints lead DIRECTLY to the flag, the bots will grab the flag too often and too fast.

The map does have a built in "flag creating" sort of thing. But it does not create waypoints. for further details read

snippet: However, there are several impulse commands to help you add waypoints without having to think about programming at all.  The tricky thing is then testing your waypoints and figuring out how to pick better points.<br><br>I don't think the version I sent back to Matt has those implule commands bound to anything. So until they are bound to a key they won't work.<br><br>Maybe I'll have time to fix the CFG files this afternoon.<br><br>Last modification: randall - 05/28/01 at 13:06:07

I still have the old version on my desktop and I ran through my newest map and threw in some waypoints and then sent them to the log file. I just need to figure out how to add them to the bot code and compile them. I have MS embedded visual tools for the pocketpc. could I use that to edit and compile the code? assuming I figured out how to edit it at all.

There should be a program which embeds it for you.<br><br>Remember, Quake editing was so prolific because it was the great equalizer. For instance, I can make a Quake level. That right there says a lot since I suck at 3D, and have no background in this sort of thing. Yet with all the chimp proof programs out there, anyone can literally contribute.<br><br>Dig a little deeper, I'm sure you'll find the program I'm referring to. For the life of me I can't remember the name, but I'm pretty sure it had BSP in the name.<br><br>

Emmbedded won't allow much of any editing beside ppc editing :/
