no, I ask that because my map is still only 10% done... I wonder how much will take to compile when it´s done!

102 seconds is a long time, but that may be because your map is large. Certainly on an P3800 it'll compile way faster than mine.

I don't think there is anything you can do about long compile times.

xid, when mapmaking there is a difference between a good map maker and an excellent map maker. A GOOD map maker makes his maps LOOK good. An EXCELLENT map maker makes his maps RUN good.

Here's the real deal: it doesn't matter how good it looks, if the map doesn't run good, too. It will be unplayable and nobody will spend the time to admire your work.

Here's an example of where I started with DM Museum:

This is the Sin engine, and most of those screenshots are around 300-400 wpoly. I knew there was no way in hell I was going to be able to achieve anything ilke that with pocketQuake. Even getting the map to look like that with WinQuake/glQuake would be a chore. You can't tell from the screenshots but there is semi-transparent glass all over the place.

For anyone who has played DM Museum, you know that I had to eliminate alot of details in order to make it playable. Look at the difference between the maintenance/duct areas :)

BTW, I'm thinking about making that Sin Map into a virtual museum displaying some of my work. I've already slimmed the engine core down to 3 megs and expect the entire download to be around 5 megs.

Basically, viewers won't need the Sin game to run it, since it will be built in.

This virtual museum will be different than anything seen before, since it will allow you to wander around and even go into the maintenance areas.

That's big alright. Remember, if the file gets too big, it won't be very playable on the pocketPC. PocketPC has a finate number of resources, because unfortunately Microsoft doesn't divide the resources by zero to make them infinate. :)

For real, not everyone is willing to dump all their files to play a map. I was thinking that 600K-700K was getting too big. So that is something to think about.

Yeah, I know. But this map is more like a project, a concept map, you know, I wanna see if I´m good enough to make a really cool, big and smooth map... :)

Last modification: Diego Cueva - 07/10/01 at 12:27:00
