GFX.wad file not loading

I have unzipped the "pak" file twice and added it into my id1 directory. I have read the manual (read me) many times and have not found the awnser. Please help. My current pak is called pak0 and is 18 mb I also tried unzipping it once to 8 mb.<br>     Thanks,<br>         Chris<br>P.S. What does gz stand for and if it is a program where can I get it?
