In need of textures

In need of textures

Postby Matt Keys » Jun 22, 2001 @ 8:50pm

I need some textures for my next map. This map will be an outside map specificaly designed for use with the Navy Seals mod, of course it will work with just about any DM map. So far I need a nice grass and sky texture. For the grass it would be nice if the texture "repeats" well, meaning that when it is tiled across the ground in my map you can notice the lines where the texture borders touch. Also, I could use a texture that looks like grass that has been walked on alot, sorta trampled with dirt spots showing. I would make my own custom textures myself but I suck at it. So if anyone can help me out I would be very thankful.

Matt, I can help make some textures. I figured out a pretty good method of blending different colors of dirt, concrete and grass in Kustok.

Sky textures are pretty easy to create, but a bitch to blend with with the environment.

Ok, I have found most of the textures I needed including the trampled grass. So, most of the hard ones are out of the way. All I need now is a sky texture, light blue sky, slightly cloudy, daylight. If anyone has any textures that would work good for worn down buildings, that would be cool.

Oh, and a texture of just plain old dirt would be cool. Not just a texture of flat brown color though:)

What kind of worn down buildings? brick, wood, metal... what kind of architecture. A photo might help. And what kind of dirt? I have some rock/dirt stuff that I made and haven't converted to Quake yet. Right now they are UT format.

Well, if you can picture this.. I am going for a "counter-stike" type map. With old buildings ran down and made of wood, metal and perhaps some cement. I am not certain how to explain the architecture, except third world after a war. I also plan to incorporate some underground tunnels and have the land "hilly" in areas. In between buildings I want to have pathways that appear to have been beaten down by people walking on them so much. I was thinking of surrounding the whole map with a metal fence of some sort to help solve the sky/wall texture blending. About the soil, I dont think gravel would fit in to well, I need it for the space in between the buildings where the grass has worn away and now its just dirt pathways.

Actually its rock/dirt from the Columbia Gorge in Washington State. Kind of a dry desert look; picture CS's de-dust map.

Of course it doesn't matter what kind of dirt, since I can make any kind in any color. I can also blend into grass, rubble, concrete, asphalt... It would be interesting to try mud with footprints deeply imbedded into it.

So the architecture need to be city-type. At first I was picturing run-down abandoned barn.

Creating texture sets is a slow process, so I'll see what I can do. Just use "placeholder" textures in your map for now, and I'll send them to you as I create them.

IF you want me to that is.

Believe me when I say, yes I want you to. Some more info on the buildings, I plan to have four of them aranged in a square, one being significantly bigger than the other three. I have been thinking of adding some kind of brush in the middle of all of these buildings, maybe a well? Some textures blending into grass sounds good, if you do that though, the grass on your textures would not match the grass that I have selected. So you could either make your own grass, or I could send you the ones I found. Thats your call.

Also, this is pushing it, but could you create a small texture that I could add around the bottom of my buildings? This texture would be of taller grass that has grown around the outskirts of the buildings, and just have a brown backgrund behind the grass since that will go with most building textures.

Yes on all accounts. I think... let me review your post.

A well would be easy. Maybe shrubbery or something that usually goes between building. Or a dumpster.

I can blend the textures with whatever you have on hand. Just send me the textures so I can use them for the blend.

Tall grass growing up along side the building would be easy to do, and so would creeping ivy. The background could be brown, brick, concrete or whatever you choose for a background. Most likely I'll create a variety and let you choose, since creating 5 textures of the same type doesn't take much more time than creating 1 (they are masked with layers so it is just a matter of swapping the background).

I'll get started on this tonight, and begin with the buildings. What sizes: 64x64 128x128 64x128

Keep in mind the larger the textures, the larger the filesize will be. But smaller textures tend to be repetitive and boring. So it's your call.

48x48 for the grass around the bottom of the buildings.

The grass/dirt blending does not need to be any bigger than it takes to move from grass to dirt, and maybe 64 long.

The standard for sky textures seems to be 256x128

the dirt can be 96x96 also, your idea about the footprints sunk into the mud sounds cool.

Hey what luck, the grass I am using is from you:) I got it from one of those texture wads you have.Last modification: Matt Keys - 06/24/01 at 22:25:59

Okay, you've seen the screenshots. That was only 5 textures, 6 if you include the sky. I'll create some more and send you a WAD with about 10 to 12 textures tomorrow. That should get you started.

I updated the images in the message, so if you review it again, it should have the updated graphics (assuming you didn't delete the massage).

I added some damaged walls and cracks to the textures set; I think there are 10 or 12 textures now. Do you want me to send you the texture WAD?

In the future, I'll re-use the same WADfile and you can just overwrite the old one. That way you won't have a hundred different WADs to sort through.
