Funny that you mention no market for pocket gaming. Because in a recent interview I read on gamespy or one of thos sites, John Carmack said that he sees the future of gaming eventually going to handhelds and that the people who are developing for that platform now are gunna have their chance to shine.

Carmack is the man. I don't know where he gets his ideas, but the man is a pioneer/wizard.

Last modification: randall - 03/28/01 at 22:27:42

ya but didn't he make that HORRIBLE game Diaktana? that game sucked, or maybe that was the other guy that helped make those games I forgot. But it seems to me that Doom 3 will probably not be as good as we hope, with so much antipaction and hopefullness behind the game i don't think he'll be able to satsify all of his fans

Alright, got PocketHexen on my Ipaq... Runs great, aside from the missing keyboard, however, I can't strafe! I'm using a Targus Stowaway Keyboard, and the same senario happened to me with both Hexen and Doom......The Alt key doesn't seem to work. Could this have something to do with the fact that there is no Alt key on the soft keyboard standard on the Pocket PC? Any comments would be greatly appreciated....
Randall:

I agree, I just hope he does better with the new DOOM than he did with Quake 3 :( I mean DOOM was at a great expense, he lost some great talent over it.

Last modification: 999 - 03/29/01 at 11:03:17

This didn't start out to be a LONG post. I just love game engines though.

John Romero (one of the original id software guys) did Daikatana. That game was unfortunate; it could have been very good.

I have never been impressed with id softwares models, textures or maps- this applies to Doom and the entire Quake series. For some reason the games always seems "unfinished" and uninspired. They all reak of sameness- rusty metal and chiseled rock.

Which is odd, because I really respect the work and talent of individuals like Andrian Carmack (texture artist) and Paul Steed (modeller).

The ENGINES on the other hand have always been a source of amazement for me. Id softwares robust engines spawned some impressive modified engines like:

Hexen, Heretic (Doom)
Halflife, Hexen II (Quake)
Sin (Quake II)
FAKK 2 (Quake III)

John Carmack really knows what he is doing.

Has anyone checked out Michael Abrash's "Graphics Programming Black Book: Special Edition"? It's a fairly old book, possibly not in print anymore. It discusses the Doom and Quake Engines, and offers an insight into Carmacks eccentric talent.

It isn't a page-turner; it's more of a reference into 3D programming with ASM and C++ code for optimisations, polygon drawing, backface culling, etc.

This is a must-have book for 3D game programmers.

I agree about id games seeming unfinished. They started out as shareware, and it seems id hasn't quite moved out of that yet. I don't like games where you can determine what the entire game looks and plays like with one level.
That said, I think Doom was by far id's greatest game (I am a regular at www.doomworld.com). It always struck me as nothing more than a first-person Gauntlet in hell (all you did was kill monsters, run around in mazes, and find keys in maps that were essentially 2D), but that was part of its charm. I don't think Doom3 will be nearly as good, simply because Carmack doesn't make games, he makes engines (with a "demo game" attached, such as Quake II), but I don't worry about it, since Doom still has quite a devoted following (and some of the ports let Doom do everything Quake can do, such as 3D maps, 3D monsters, jumping, swimming, etc.). Quake is great because of its addon levels, to me. But there are some damn good ones out there.
Oh, and Dan, when Doom3 comes out, do you want to port that to the iPAQ? :P

I think I may chill a bit on porting software for a while. However, it looks like UAE may be making its way to Pocket PC before too long... ;)

Dan East
