PocketQuake Poll

Yikes Randall!!!

Easy now!!!

Let's be realistic here, we don't exactly have the like of Nintendo or Sony making games for the PocketPC, so Mike is doing all that he can to provide a content specific site to the PPC community.

Does a crossword puzzle or hangman game really need to be covered and praised? Sure, maybe not, but the fact that it's available where once there was a great void has got to stand for something. Not to mention, there are prolly a great number of people who find those types of games more their "speed".

Hat's off to Mike for continually posting new and relevant news, any good internet journalist knows how hard it is to come up with a new scoop everyday.

In closing, this thread isn't meant to downplay the views on Pocketgamer.org, or point out the quality of the software on show, I simply posted this thread to get some of the frequenters here riled up and hopefully determined to vote and sway the results to what *we the enthusiasts* believe it should be.

:)

We love ya Mike, and most of us would have never found the PocketQuake site to begin with had it not been for your site: .

I don't mean to rag on PocketGamer. They do their job, and I guess they do it well. Lots of people go to their site daily which accounts for FAR more than anything I could refute.

I guess my point is that there "doesn't need to be news every day".

I don't recall anything about the development cycle of PocketQuake on that site. That sounds newsworthy. How about the "specifically for PocketQuake" maps? How about the bots? How about...

From the PocketGamer news page:
An SH3 version of Pocket Quake is now available, meaning that Jornada owners can sample the fun... and vote in the poll!

Okay, so they want people that have played a release that is 1 day old, on the worst performing hardware on which PQ can run, that does not even have a D-Pad, to vote on how playable PQ is on that device? Do they want PQ to look bad or what?

Dan East

Alright, I have to defend PocketGamer here. PC Gamer may not have Who Wants To Be A Millionare on its cover, but thats because there is an alternative. And I'm also sure that they review bad games as well as good, so PocketGamer surely has the right to put up a number puzzle game. Besides, just because we don't happen to like number puzles doesn't mean others don't, and PocketGamer is supposed to report on new developments in the PPC gaming world, no matter how little they may be. And finally, PocketGamer isn't a "praise PocketQuake" site, so expecting them to make a new story when a new map is released is ridiculous. That's what this forum is for.
As for the poll, I think it's fair. Yes, it may play slower on a MIPS than an ARM, but that's no reason to exclude MIPS users from voting. Mike has stated many times on his site that he enjoys PocketQuake, all he's doing now is asking others what they think about it. It's nothing official, IT'S JUST A POLL! And in all fairness, if the SH3 build is too slow to play, than they have every right to say so. I have an ARM processor, and I happen to love PocketQuake in its current form, but I'm sure Jornada users don't, and that's their right. If you release something as big as this has been, you should expect some criticism, and not get upset when it happens.

I agree in some points, that its fair enough to ask people how playable *they* find the current version of PocketQuake - Although I belive it'll tend to show how many people are tollerant (or not)with what they expect of a powerfull game as Quake on a Pocket PC, rather than an appreciation of the quality programming skills - But saying that Pocket Quake deserves critisism for the Jordana versions is a little off.

Remember Dan didnt want to port to anything other than the iPAQ due to speed (as well as not owning another device). Thanks to Dans help, and volenteers to port to other devices, these have been made available. Dan could easily have said 'Sod it! do it on your own', but he helpped with the development. I dont really think its fair to critisise Dan for doing this.

At the end of the day, it come down to anticipation of what your going to get, and concidering not only 2 months ago Quake was said to be impossible, I think I have a small miracle sitting on my MicroDrive :)

PQ on Jornada isn't that bad, nobody needs a d-pad.

The thing is, nobody is critisizing Dan. Is the gameplay on the Jornada right now good or not? I think it's a fair question, personally.
However, I DO think that the poll could be changed to something like "As of 3/31/00, how is the gameplay?" But at this point, I think we're splitting hairs over the wording of a little poll.

I agree with seth completely, even though we're both kinda biased towards pocketgamer.org. It's funny while we're still arguing over this that PocketQuake is being advertised everyday on the frobt page of Pocketgamer.org just because of this silly poll.

The point is, they should wait until a final version (or at least a non-beta) version before even considering anything like a poll.

It's just plain inconsiderate.

Yeah... kindof, but it can also (if the results really suck are if they're very good) affect the way the rest of the betas are programmed, i.e. it could push the programming skills of Dan to focus more on this or that... I know that sounds a little off, but it makes sense to me.

The poll asks about gameplay... Dan is not in control of the gameplay at all, that was id software's original job when programming Quake. All Dan can do is make it run faster on PocketPCs. Get over it, no matter what the results are it's not an attack on Dan East or PocketQuake at all. It's asking purely for gameplay. I could play Quake on my computer and respond to that poll.

Moose, you fail to realize that without Dan's effort there would be No "Gameplay" at all.

So how can you rate the gameplay if the engine it depends on is still in it's infancy?

How would you rate the gameplay on Counter Strike, if it only ran at 5fps tops? Not very high, naturally.
