I apologise to all PPC users for this long message. This really isn't worthy of argument, but you guys can pretty much ignore it since you already know this information.

Since this Palm guy doesn't appear to be too technically savvy, I am sticking to consumer information. Instead of blanket statements and opinions, I will state the facts.

Consumers are not forced into using Microsoft products, contrary to what the un-technically savvy government will have you believe.

I use Windows for one simple reason- compatibility. I can buy whatever hardware I want and know there is a Windows driver for it. I can buy software, and as long as it says "For MSDOS and above" I know I can run it with no problems.

Windows 2000 is extremely stable and designed for the business power-user. I run it as a server, and haven't even had to look at it for 6 months. There isn't even a keyboard connected to it, since I don't ever have to DO anything with it.

I don't know what specific OS the xBox runs, but Microsoft is probably using a variation of Win32 and DirectX (or some other gaming API). Since it is using designated hardware, it will be extremely stable. Developing software is hard enough without having to learn the ins and outs of individual hardware and OS requirements. xBox will eliminate all that by providing developers with a familiar platform.

I'd expect that any new game that is written for Windows will eventually appear as an xBox title as well- that'll be quite a sizable library.

Sega gave up the console fight and now creates software for xBox, Nintendo and Playstation. Nintendo is struggling to regain it's title as console king, after losing it to Playstation three years ago.

xBox looks to be the most powerful console we have ever seen- it is basically a stripped down PC with 3D accleration.

Palm is still around because it had a huge market share, and there are still many dedicated users. Before PocketPC came out, there wasn't a decent alternative.

Palm does what it is supposed to do, and it does it very well- a simple PIM. Developers tried to push Palm to the limits by creating games like Dreadling and thousands of other software titles. Palm had nothing to do with it, but benefitted.

I don't think millions of peoples choice is the Palm OS. They don't have a choice. They buy the device and that is it.

PocketPC is capable of running Linux- a viable alternative to Windows.

PocketPC has an enormous number of software titles. Palm has more, but Palm has been around longer, and the software really isn't all that good. Does more mean better? No, not in this case.

PPC has the hardware to run emulators at a decent speed. I can play ANY Color Gameboy game. I can play arcade titles with MAMECE. I can play NES titles. I haven't tried SNES yet.

Software written for Windows can be ported to PocketPC. We already have Doom, Doom2, Hexen (or Heretic?) and Quake. Expect other familiar titles like Ultima, Sim City and Need For Speed to appear soon. These aren't lame Gameboy conversions, these titles will actually resemble the original.

Palm is getting better and better because... well that is just the dumbest comment I have ever seen. Of course it's getting better- who would buy it if it got worse?

In the end, PocketPC is created for the power user. We are the people that build our own computers. We are the people that overclock our 3D cards. We are the people that hack just for the fun of it. We are the developers and engineers. We are at the forefront of technology. We are the technically savvy. We are power-hungry and demanding.

But we are not simple.

Last modification: randall - 05/23/01 at 12:32:09
